The government of South Sorong Regency, West Papua Province stated that the area has an area of 7,500 hectares of sago forest as food reserves.
The regent of South Sorong, Samsudin Anggiluli in Sorong, Sunday, said that the government had given permission to two companies to set up factories for processing sago into food, namely the sago mills PT ANJ and Perum Perhutani.
He said that PT ANJ's sago mill was operational and employed as many as 5,000 employees. The company provides opportunities for local people to work thereby reducing unemployment.
According to him, Perum Perhutani has not carried out the production process until now. Therefore, it is hoped that the West Papuan government will discuss with the central government so that the company can operate.
This will open up new job opportunities for the people in the South Sorong area as well as increase local revenue or PAD.
"We ask that the Acting Governor of West Papua can coordinate and even convey directly to the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment to encourage Perum Perhutani's sago factory," he said.
He said that a company like this in addition to national food security, also provides income for local residents who work so as to improve the economy.
"It can also overcome the extreme poverty that plagues the community," he said.
Actually, the Minister of Agriculture of the Republic of Indonesia, Syahrul Yasin Limpo, asked people in the West Papua Province to continue to preserve sago plants as food reserves.
"Sago is an extraordinary plant that has been given by God and has been around for a long time to fulfill local food, so it should not be abandoned," he said in Manokwari, West Papua Province.
Sago plays a major role in food supply as well as strengthening food security in the West Papua Province. Its existence has also contributed greatly to national food security.
