Fields with exotic panoramas at the foot of Mount Cycloop covering an area of 40,863 square meters will become the arena for archery athletes to battle at the XX/2021 Papua National Sports Week (PON).
ARENA, the sport of archery, is here for the first time on Cenderawasih Earth. This venue is located in the Kampung Harapan sports complex, East Sentani District, Jayapura Regency.
This venue was built with a building area of 1,217 square meters and has a playing field area of 10,100 square meters also equipped with a training field of 8,207 square meters.
This venue was built in a package with the rowing and roller skating venues based on Presidential Instruction (Inpres) Number 1 of 2020 concerning Acceleration of Support for the Implementation of the XX National Sports Week (PON) and the XVI National Paralympic Week 2020 in Papua Province.
The work on the archery, rowing, and roller skate arenas cost a budget of Rp. 116.583 billion and began work in February 2020. Handled directly by the Ministry of PUPR in collaboration with partner PT Nindya Karya (Persero), the archery arena is targeted to be fully completed in April 2021.
Minister of PUPR, Basuki Hadimuljono, said the construction of the XX/Papua PON sports venue was carried out carefully, starting from the design, construction and supervision stages while still paying attention to safety aspects involving supervision from the Construction Safety Committee (K2 Committee).
"It is hoped that the completion of the PON venue will not only be the pride of the Papuan people, but also the pride of all Indonesian people. This is also expected to encourage young people, especially Papuan athletes, to be more enthusiastic and achieve to become champions, both in the national and international arenas," said Minister Basuki, some time ago.
The Governor of Papua Province, Lukas Enembe, is optimistic that the implementation of the national celebration will be successful considering the seriousness of Papua as the host in preparing an international standard venue.
“Now we have built all international standard venues. We are ready to be a good host to all participants from all provinces in Indonesia. Our goal is to build a venue with international standards, not only for organizing PON, but also hosting Asian events and even the 2032 Olympics," said Governor Enembe.
"We are very pleased with the progress that has been made in preparing the PON venues by the Central Government, while the venues prepared through APBD funds have also been completed," said Acting Head of the Papua Province Sports and Youth Service (Disorda), Alexander Kapisa.
The archery venue of PON XX Papua is not only an ordinary arena for archery athletes from all over Indonesia to compete for 15 gold medals. This venue is referred to as a beautiful battleground by presenting exotic panoramas.
The landscape of the Cycloop mountains is a unique attraction that attracts the existence of this PON XX archery venue. The scenery is much different from similar venues in other areas in Indonesia.
The head of the Papua Regional II Settlement Infrastructure Implementation Unit at the PUPR Ministry, Deni Arditya, claimed that the Papuan archery arena had an advantage in its geographical location.
“The advantage of this Papuan archery venue is its attractive geographical location. It is located in the valley of the foot of the Cycloop mountain, beautiful and nice. This venue has a national standard and is eligible for PON XX. The design also prioritizes local wisdom,” said Deni.
Deni explained that currently the archery arena has reached 80 percent progress and only leaves the final stages of work such as planting grass and structuring the area.
"Hopefully in 1-2 months this can be completed. Currently the process is still temporary planting grass, paving blocks, and others. Yes, it's the finishing stage. On the inside, it's just a competition area, there are no spectator stands," he explained.
The Chairperson of the Provincial Board of the Indonesian Archery Association (Pengprov Perpani) Papua, Dr Juliana J. Waromi, said he was satisfied with the physical progress of the XX PON archery arena. He hopes that the venue will be completed soon and the athletes can use it for trials.
"The venue is still under construction and progress is very good, hopefully this venue will be completed soon and Papuan archery athletes can practice here," he said.
Deputy Chairperson of the Perpani Papua Daily, Nason Utti, added that with the existence of an international standard archery venue, his party was increasingly optimistic that the athletes could present the best results at the XX PON later.
"In addition to having a good physical building and field, we also have ambitions to win the most gold medals. Whatever happens we have to be optimistic to win. That's our target, because even though the Covid-19 pandemic has hit our country, we can still get through this difficult time," he said.
