The Papuan Separatist and Terrorist Group (KST) has again acted and this time it is considered very outrageous because they massacred 10 civilians in Nduga, Papua and one of them was a priest. The public condemned KST's brutal actions and supported law enforcement against the mob.
Papua is part of Indonesia and is recognized by international law. But unfortunately there are some people who want Papua to be independent, and they founded the OPM (Free Papua Organization) and its accomplice organization, KST (Separatist and Terrorist Group). In practice, KST became a terror and forced the people to follow them to defect.
On July 16, 2022, 21 KST members surrounded a residential area in Kenyam District, Nduga Regency. Initially there was only 1 KST member who came and brandished a sharp weapon at a resident's kiosk. Then followed 20 of his colleagues who carried 15 long-barreled weapons.
KST asked all the men there to come out and the 5 were beaten and shot. Still not satisfied, they blocked the truck that was coming and the 5 civilians inside were immediately shot. In total there were 10 victims of the KST massacre and one of them was a priest, named Eliaser Baner.
The victims were immediately rushed to Mimika Hospital and they are now dead. In addition to the 10 fatalities, there were also 2 people who were seriously injured. This was stated by Kombes Ahmad Musthafa, Head of Public Relations of the Papua Police.
The public condemned the brutality committed by KST. How can they attack innocent civilians? People certainly do not have weapons as a means of self-defense, and under the threat of long-barreled weapons they will immediately be frightened and become victims.
If there is a tragic event like this, KST usually argues that the people who are at fault are spies or undercover officers. Even though it was clear that they were ordinary civilians, KST still didn't believe it. The KST members have been brainwashed by the frontman so they are willing to commit atrocities like this.
The priest who became the victim was also a native Papuan and they (KST) were very willing to slaughter their own tribal brethren. Normal people would respect the priest as a public figure. However, KST actually killed a religious leader, and this shows their despicable morals.
If there is an incident like this then the migrants are also afraid because they intend to work in Papua. But instead they are threatened by the existence of KST which does not indiscriminately commit criminal acts. Moreover, 8 out of 10 victims of the attack in Nduga were migrants, and their bodies were flown to Palu and to NTT.
The conflict caused by KST opened people's eyes to the fact that the problems in Papua are very complicated. Not only independence demands by rebel groups. However, it has spread to disputes that cause great losses among immigrants.
Therefore, there needs to be an appeal from community leaders who act as mediators, that Papua is part of Indonesia. All citizens are united, not only native Papuans but also migrants. If they are united in fighting KST, the public is optimistic that the rebel group can be disbanded.
The security factor also needs to be considered, and the number of officers is also increased. More intense security is carried out in areas in Papua that are often conflicted, such as Nduga and Intan Jaya. The security forces did not only focus on arresting KST, but also on prevention. Spies can be spread so that there are no attacks that take a lot of lives like this.
The Papuan people themselves are not surprised if there are security forces around them, because they realize that the officers have come to save them from the KST attack. The existence of the apparatus is for prevention, and will not turn Papua into a Military Operations Area (DOM) as it was in Aceh several decades ago.
Meanwhile, for the eradication of KST, the apparatus is even more intensive in arresting its members. Operation Cartenz Peace continues to be carried out so that KST is immediately arrested. The pursuit is carried out to remote areas of Papua, so that the rebel group does not come to residential areas and carry out further terror.
Papuans also cooperate with the security forces by becoming informants. They are not pro-KST. On the other hand, indigenous Papuans notify them when there is suspicious activity, which is suspected to have been carried out by KST. With the cooperation between the people and the apparatus, the community is optimistic that KST will soon be overcome.
The community strongly condemns the brutal actions carried out by 21 KST members in Nduga, Papua. This incident that claimed lives was very heartbreaking and should not happen again. Therefore, the arrests of KST members continue to be carried out intensively.
