Strategies to Solve Education Problems in Papua through the Special Autonomy in Education

Vice Chancellor of the University of Papua Manokwari, West Papua, Agus Sumule, believes one of the strategies to solve the problem of education in Papua is to add state universities.

This statement was said by the Vice Chancellor of the University of Papua in Manokwari, West Papua in an online discussion "Otsus, Education, and the Future of Papua," Monday (07/13/2020).

According to him, the strategic area for the development of the tertiary institution would be in the central mountains of Papua.

He said if the central and provincial governments were serious, the development of the tertiary institution could be realized in the coming July 2021.

"Lecturers who later teach at the tertiary institutions are those who have completed their education abroad. They go home to become lecturers and can be appointed as ASN. Let's think about that together, "said Agus Sumule.

From the point of view of a lecturer, he estimates that if the tertiary institutions in the central mountains are seriously managed, it is likely that other state universities in Papua and West Papua, such as Cenderawasih University (Uncen) Jayapura, Unipa Manokwari, and Musamus University in Merauke will be rivaled.

"Why, because the lecturers are those who have graduated from abroad, the English is very neat. Going home later became a lecturer at Uncen, Unipa, and Musmus, but he lost, "he said.

In the same discussion, Chairperson of the Papua Muda Foundation, Rini Modouw, hoped that graduates from overseas universities who had returned to Papua, especially those who received scholarships from the Papuan government, could play a role in helping to solve the problem of education in Indonesia's easternmost province.

According to the teacher of one of the high schools in Jayapura City who completed his doctoral degree at California State University-United States, Papuan children graduating abroad should be involved or involved with relevant parties to help improve education in Papua.

For example teaching in areas or schools that lack teachers if they have not found work. Because one of the problems with education in Papua is the lack of teachers.

"Younger siblings who return to Papua help the teachers. Become an educator. For example in the Community Learning Activity Center (PKBM). If you don't know the information please ask the Papua Education Office, "said Rini Modouw.
