The Congress of Indigenous Peoples of the Archipelago Shows New Colors in Papua

Secretary General (Secretary General) of the Alliance of Indigenous Peoples of the Archipelago (AMAN), Rukka Sombolinggi saw the life of the Indigenous Peoples in Papua as an inspiration in the world so that new colors emerged during the VI Congress of Indigenous Peoples of the Archipelago (KMAN).

According to him, the implementation of KMAN VI in Papua from the beginning wanted to present the people in Papua to be there for Indonesia and the world.

All Indigenous Peoples who come are expected to see what has happened in the Tabi Customary Area in the last 10 years.

"When we talk about Papua, the main essence is diversity. Sometimes there are a lot of skewed perceptions, this is the time for us to show the true color of Papua," said Rukka at the KMAN Media Center, Barnabas Youwe (SBY) Stadium, Sentani, Sunday (23/10/2022).

The series of congress activities in 12 villages in the City and District of Jayapura, more precisely on the islands and villages on Lake Sentani, according to him, can be reflected in the form of islands throughout the archipelago.

Rukka ensured that the Deputy Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Muhaimin Iskandar and other officials would attend and hold a dialogue to take the position of Indigenous Peoples and the state.

In particular, the fulfillment and protection of the rights of Indigenous Peoples is currently stopped in the constitution.

"Tomorrow at the opening, various events will be held including establishing a framework for cooperation with state institutions with all elements that have business with Indigenous Peoples to have dialogue and find solutions," he explained.

The Secretary General of AMAN also emphasized that with all the limitations KMAN VI in Papua had been implemented, smoothly and without any obstacles. At 14.00 WIT around 1,300 participants have been registered and will continue to arrive until tomorrow and the day after tomorrow.

In addition to Indigenous Peoples and indigenous organizations in the archipelago, there are also Indigenous Peoples Organizations in Asia, namely, Deputy Secretary of The Asia Indigenous Peoples Pact Foundation (JAIPF).

JAIPF itself, said Rukka, is a regional organization at the Asian level whose members are in 17 Asian countries, consisting of Indigenous Peoples organizations including AMAN. Then the Secretary General of Indigenous Peoples in Nepal, Secretary General of Malaysia, Cambodia, and the Philippines.

The supporting elements of Indigenous Peoples, he continued, include local, national and international donors and NGOs who have been working with Indigenous Peoples.

Furthermore, support from NGOs, organizations, and donors is here to synergize with the fact that many Indigenous Peoples are still not entitled to their rights.

"Unlike in Jayapura Regency, the regent is one of them who fights for the rights of Indigenous Peoples," he said.

Rukka said KMAN exists because all existing elements, as well as the government, come together, gather, have a dialogue to discuss important issues related to Indigenous Peoples in order to determine the strategic work that AMAN must do in the next five years. (*)
