The Cartenz Peace Operation 2022 is an effective strategy for the police in dealing with armed criminal groups (KKB) in the Papuan jurisdiction, said the Papuan Police Chief Inspector General Pol Mathius D Fakhiri.
Mathius in a written statement received in Jakarta, Wednesday said that this operation puts forward a humanist approach.
Mathius explained that the Cartenz Peace Operation will start from February to December 2022. In an effort to deal with violent armed conflicts, the police officers tasked with this operation have been given instructions to be more defensive than to attack or respond to KKB attacks.
According to him, in several incidents, the KKB carried out attacks and police personnel responded, resulting in gunfights that created pros and cons in the community.
“So far, we have always responded actively in shooting cases. In responding to this, there is always a firefight (more) the negative side, because (KKB) takes advantage of the moment to bring down the government," said Mathius.
"We saw that the last operation reduced the number of community victims whose impact on this activity, so that the victims decreased, including the community. And we caught many (KKB)," he explained.
The Head of Peace Operations for Cartenz 2022 hopes that in the future many members of the KKB will be educated and willing to surrender. So that they can return to their normal society.
Because in this operation, the police involve the active role of community leaders, traditional leaders, and religious leaders to assist the government and the police-TNI in it, to encourage accelerated development towards prosperity in each region where armed conflict is still occurring in Papua.
The Cartenz Peace Operation continues the existing program in the Nemangkawi Operation by prioritizing the Binmas function played by regional units in all police stations that carry out the Binmas Noken program,
Previously, the Head of the National Police Public Relations Division, Inspector General Pol Dedi Prasetyo, said that the National Police had changed the name of Operation Nemangkawi. The KKB Hunter Operation in Papua was renamed Damai Cartenz 2022.
“That's right to be Operation Cartenz Peace. The soft approach is prioritized and improves the welfare of the Papuan people," said Dedi, Monday (10/1).
