Papua is Ready to Switch Analog TV to Digital

Termination of Analog TV broadcasts and subsequent switching to Digital TV or better known as Analog Switch Off (ASO) in Indonesia no later than 2 November 2022.

This is the mandate of Law No. 11 of 2020 concerning Job Creation.

The termination process is divided into three stages, namely the first stage on 30 April 2022, the second stage on 25 August 2022, and the third or final stage on 2 November 2022.

In the ASO process in Papua Province, the first stage of the region that will experience the termination of Analog TV is the City and District of Jayapura and Keerom District.

Then in the next stage, covering Merauke, Jayawijaya, Yahukimo, Mamberamo Raya, Central Mamberamo, Yalimo, Mimika, Nabire, Biak Numfor and Supriori Regencies.

Director of Media Management, Directorate General of Public Information and Communication (IKP) of the Ministry of Communication and Information (Kominfo) Dr. Nursodik Gunarjo explained, several things must be done to prepare for the termination of Analog TV broadcasts.

Infrastructure is the main thing in digital broadcasting.

Then socialization related to the discontinuation of Analog TV.

“So we need to hold activities to educate the public about the benefits and how to watch this digital broadcast. This socialization is, of course, our joint responsibility, both the government, the community and the entire ecosystem involved in it," he said in a virtual regional art show, entitled Digitally Prepared: Welcome Digital Broadcasts from Papua, Saturday (9/10/2021).

One of the forums for socializing related to ASO by the government is through art performances.

The socialization is carried out to ensure that the program to stop Analog TV broadcasts can run smoothly and the information conveyed to all levels of society can be right on target.

"This virtual folk art performance is not only to accelerate the development of national culture but is also expected to be able to build collective awareness as well as become an innovative and effective forum in order to make it easier for the public to understand government information and programs," he said.

The current digital transformation is part of the progress of the Indonesian nation.

Analog TV migration to Digital TV is a form of digital transformation. Digital TV provides quality broadcasts and there will be more variety of broadcast content.

"We invite all people to immediately move from Analog TV broadcasts to Digital TV broadcasts with clean images, clear voices and sophisticated technology," he said.

Meanwhile, the Papuan provincial government claimed to be very enthusiastic about welcoming this ASO program.

“The Papuan government welcomes this program. So that our people watch TV without having spots anymore with Digital TV. They can enjoy good entertainment and can choose what programs they like,” said Raja Oloan Siburian, the Head of Encryption at Diskominfo Papua Province.

On the other hand, the Regional Indonesian Broadcasting Commission (KPID) Papua sees from the side of broadcasting readiness, Papua Province currently has around 58 broadcasting institutions.

KPID Papua has carried out monitoring in the field and ensured that the broadcasting institutions are ready to welcome the cessation of Analog TV.

“We also participate in socialization, usually through interactive dialogue with broadcasting institutions. We convey to the community what ASO is, how is the migration process and how the community must prepare for the cessation of Analog TV," said the Head of KPID Papua, Rusni Abaidata.

Meanwhile, TVRI as the state-owned broadcaster stated that the broadcast area in Jayapura and several cities in Papua was ready to run the ASO program.

"Even though sometimes our society doesn't really understand (ASO).

They are still asking whether the television they use can still be used for Digital TV. We give an understanding that Analog TV can still be used for digital broadcasts. The way to do this is by using a set top box tool,” said the Papua Station TVRI News Coordinator, Paulus Palimbong.
