Ramses Ohee Explains the History of the Merger of Papua with the Republic of Indonesia

The Papua region was part of the Republic of Indonesia long before the Indonesian Independence in 1945. The area has been sparked to enter Indonesia since the Youth Pledge in 1928.

However, de jure, Papua as part of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia, after going through a democratic political process, namely the holding of the People's Opinion (Pepera) in 1969. The Act which was implemented under the mandate of the United Nations at that time, resulted in the majority of Papuans choosing to join Indonesia.

The chairman of the Red and White Front and one of the living witnesses of Pepera and Ondofolo, Ramses Ohee, said that the history of Papua being part of the Republic of Indonesia has actually been sparked since the Youth Pledge of 1928.

"Because the Papuan figure Poreu Ohee (the father of Ramses Ohee) was present at the Youth Pledge congress, in Jakarta in 1928," Ramses said while talking to the Danlanud Silaspapare Jayapura, Marsma TNI Budhi Achmadi, launching the Indonesian Air Force's official website, a few days ago.

He said that at that time Poreu Ohee was present with the capacity as a Papuan youth leader, namely the Head of Sentani Papua Village (1927). His position as Village Head was held by the appointment of the Sultan of Tidore, because Papua at that time was under the authority of the Tidore Sultanate.

This fact also confirms that Papua has become part of the Kingdom in the Archipelago (Tidore) in the pre-independence period. This evidence is stored in the documents of appointment by Sultan Tidore and his involvement in the Youth Pledge congress is stored in the Jakarta National Archives.

"When I was a child, my father used to tell me how he was present at the Youth Pledge in Jakarta in 1928 representing the youth of Papua," he said.

Ramses Ohee regretted that, at that time, the documentation system had not been managed properly, so the story of a Papuan youth named Poreu Ohee joining the Youth Pledge was not stored properly. This story has only been passed down from generation to generation in the Ohee family in Sentani.

Ramses Ohee has indeed received the Satya Lencana Pepera, but he has not succeeded in fighting for his father Poreu Ohee to become a hero until now.
