Papua targets to win XX PON soccer gold

The chairman of the PSSI Papua Province Association, Benhur Tomi Mano, stated that his party is targeting the men's and women's soccer teams to be able to win gold medals at the XX Papua National Sports Week (PON) on October 2-15.

"It is true, we are targeting gold. Hopefully the team can reach the final and compete at the Papua Bangkit Stadium," said the man who is familiarly called BTM to ANTARA in Jayapura, Wednesday.

Admittedly, the target for the men's soccer team is indeed quite heavy considering that from several trials the results have not been satisfactory. For this reason, his party encourages the football team to continue to improve their abilities by increasing the number of match tests.

"From the reports we received, the results of the match test were not satisfactory. There is still time, it must be improved again," added BTM.

Although encouraged by many trials, the man who also serves as Mayor of Jayapura hopes that the players and support team will continue to comply with the health protocols (prokes) considering that currently COVID-19 cases continue to increase in various regions in Indonesia.

"The entire team must maintain conditions and comply with the procedures so as not to be exposed. Moreover, the team is undergoing training outside the city," said BTM affirmed.

The Papuan football team for PON XX is currently undergoing a training camp in Makassar, South Sulawesi and has undergone several trial matches. According to the schedule, the new team will return to Jayapura in September.

As the host, the Papuan football team is clearly the superior. Moreover, Papua is known for its warehouse of potential players.
