The discourse on the expansion of Papua has been rolling fast after President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) 's visit to the region this week. Minister of Home Affairs (Mendagri) Tito Karnavian stated that at least one of the two new provinces in Papua is already in the finalization stage.
"The central government is likely to accommodate only the addition of two provinces. This is what we are exploring. What is clear is that South Papua is OK," said Tito.
South Papua will take part of Papua Province, namely Mappi Regency, Boven Digoel Regency, Asmat Regency, and Merauke Regency. To meet the minimum requirements of five districts / cities to support the new province, according to Tito, Merauke will be split into Merauke City and Merauke Regency.
The province of Central Papua is under discussion to also cover areas in northern Papua which include archipelagic areas, such as Biak Numfor, Supiori, Yapen, Waropen, Serui, and the coast of Nabire. Regional heads in the region have recently been fighting for their own provinces.
The expansion plan submitted by the Minister of Home Affairs will define the boundaries of customary territories in Papua (see infographic). The province of South Papua includes an area known as Ha Anim. Meanwhile, Central Papua cuts through the Mee Pago, La pago, and Saireri areas. Other areas include Mam beramo Tami / Tabi in Jayapura and its surroundings, and Domberai and Bom berai, both in West Papua.
Previously, President Joko Wido Do had agreed to the requests of a number of parties related to the formation of the province in the Central Mountain Range of Papua. This was conveyed by Jokowi in response to suggestions from traditional community leaders in Wamena, Jayawijaya, Papua.
Meanwhile, Chairman of the Papuan People's Assembly (MRP) Timotius Murib is worried that the discourse on the formation of two new provinces will trigger horizontal conflicts in Papua. The MRP as a (institution) for cultural aspirations is very sorry if this (discourse) is being forced. Because, it will only take victims of the Papuan people themselves. The Papuan people who will become victims. MRP will refuse. "Right now, we are in a position to refuse," said Timo.
