BPS West Papua Reveals Participation in the 2020 Population Census

The West Papua Central Statistics Agency (BPS) noted that 5.06 percent of the population in West Papua Province had participated in the 2020 online population census. This shows that 94.94 percent of the population in West Papua have not participated in the online population census.

This condition will be a challenge for West Papua BPS, carrying out a further population census, given the situation of the Covid-19 pandemic that has not ended.

Not only that, Maritje admitted, the budget is also a benchmark for BPS in carrying out a further population census. This is because most of the budget has been allocated for handling Covid-19. Thus, the population census method will be changed according to the available budget.

"The realization of our online population census is only 60,222 or 5.06 percent of the total population of West Papua. This means that around 94.94 percent have not been accessed and we must step down. This is our challenge with conditions like this. Second, our budget has been streamlined for the needs of Covid-19 and there is only 1 trillion left from the initial 4 trillion, "said Maritie.

The continued population census is planned to take place in September 2020. Taking into account the geographical conditions of West Papua, Maritje admitted that she would coordinate with the central government to provide budget and time dispensations.

He hopes that with this new method that will be carried out, it can run safely and smoothly in order to realize a single data program.
