The West Papua Provincial Government promises special prizes for students who won WSEEC gold medals

The West Papua Provincial Government promised to give special prizes to five outstanding students who won gold medals in the World Science, Environment and Engineering Competition (WSEEC) which was held at the University of Indonesia as well as won the Macedonia Special Award.

The five students are Goura V Pattiselano and Justinus Marcos Serang from Villanova Manokwari Catholic High School, Sarah Glory Athalya Simanjuntak and Kezia Busthan from Manokwari I Public High School and Petrus Gyantfranco Christian Saiba from Manokwari II Public High School.

"I can't say (what the prize is), it's a secret. We will first coordinate with the Governor," said Head of the West Papua Education Office, Barnabas Dowansiba in Manokwari, Sunday.

He said the prize would only be given at the Commemoration of Indonesian Independence Day on August 17, 2022.

The student who joined the West Papua Team won a gold medal after presenting the results of research in the form of barapen or burning stones (a typical Papuan tradition) from a scientific point of view.

Goura Pattiselano said that so far Barapen has been studied quite a lot from a social point of view. He said the five of them innovated in researching the biology and physics side of the barapen tradition.

Biologically, Sarah said that her team looked at the effect of papaya leaves on the quality and maturity of the meat in the barapen, while physically examining the process of heat transfer from the stone to cook the meat.

Sarah Simanjuntak on the same occasion added that her team also identified products and methods. So far, it is known that barapen is an activity carried out outdoors in ceremonial and war activities.

"But we also want there to be some things that can be done indoors in everyday life, even by using certain technologies so that people can also get to know Papuan culture," said Sarah.

The West Papua team competed with 22 other countries with 350 teams. The fifth preparation was carried out for three months for the WSEEC competition.

The coordinator of the Terang Papua Foundation, Ella Mingkit, said that the West Papua team in the WSEEC competition were the best students who had been screened from the invitations distributed earlier.

"From 27 children, 5 children were chosen. They were guided and nurtured by Budi Santoso from Surabaya. They did all the physical, chemical and biological processes throughout the day," said Ella.

"This is proof that Papua can do it with hard work, effort and prayer. We believe that nothing can't be done," he continued.

He hopes that the West Papuan government sees the potential of students and pays more attention. The teachers at the school, said Ella, must be enthusiastic and not lose to continue to provide the best guidance.

The five students arrived at Rendani Manokwari Airport on Sunday afternoon using a Batik Air plane and were greeted with banners. The West Papua Regional Government also gave a charter when the five of them got off the pickup vehicle. Certificates of appreciation were also given to schools and parents who attended.

From Rendani Airport, the West Papua WSEEC Team was then paraded around Manokwari Regency through SMAN II, Villanova Catholic High School and SMAN I Manokwari and escorted by traffic police.
