President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has officially approved three new provinces in Papua. The provinces are South Papua Province, Central Papua Province, and Papua Mountains Province.
The ratification is contained in a Law (UU) passed by Jokowi on July 25, 2022. For South Papua Province it is regulated in Law Number 14 of 2022, Central Papua Province is regulated in Law Number 15 of 2022 and Papua Mountains Province is regulated in Law Number 16 of 2022. 2022.
The consideration for the ratification of the three laws is to achieve the goals and objectives of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia, namely to build a just, prosperous and prosperous Indonesian society based on Pancasila and the 1945 Constitution. Therefore, it is necessary to expand the territory of the Papua Province.
"That the division of territory in Papua Province needs to pay attention to the aspirations of the Papuan people to accelerate equitable development, improve public services, and improve community welfare as well as raise the dignity of the Indigenous Papuans," the law reads.
Previously, the DPR officially passed three bills for the New Autonomous Region (DOB) to become laws related to regional expansion in Papua Province. This was decided in the Plenary Session of the Session V Session Year 2021-2022, Thursday (30/6/2022).
