The Central Statistics Agency recorded the addition of 1.47 million people to the Papuan population to 4.3 million people. This addition was obtained from the results of the population census (SP) in September 2020.
"Based on the results of the 2020 population census (SP) until September the population of Papua reached 4.30 million people, of which there was an increase of 1.47 million people," said Deputy for Social Statistics, BPS Dr. Ateng Hartono after a population data consolidation meeting in Jayapura, Thursday 2 December 2021.
Ateng said that population census data is the key to implementing development, especially basic population data. The addition of the population is one of the opportunities that Papua can develop.
“The benefits of one population data for Papua can be a well-targeted planning with efficient budget planning. Not only that, human development that is more measurable is the accuracy of voter data in elections, the number of parliamentary seats and Papuan human resources," said Ateng.
Based on the results of the population census, BPS also provides population data by age group. It is known that in the era of the demographic bonus, the number of young people was more than the elderly.
"We will automatically exploit the productive age so that they can produce economically and can contribute to the economy, eradicating poverty so that they can be completed equally so that in 2024 it can reach 0 percent," said Ateng.
Ateng hopes that the Papuan Regional Government can manage the data automatically with more detailed indicators, so that it can make plans in the area according to the characteristics of the community.
"We can see from their education, university graduates majoring in vocational schools and we can also see their characteristics from their domicile, where they live, whether in rural or urban areas, making it easier to make plans," said Ateng.
