KOMPAK urges KPK to arrest corruptors in Papua

In commemoration of World Anti-Corruption Day, December 9, 2021, the Papua Anti-Corruption Community (KOMPAK) urged the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) to arrest state officials suspected of committing criminal acts of corruption in Papua Province.

This statement was made by a number of KOMPAK activists during a peaceful demonstration held at the Abepura Circle, Jayapura City, Thursday (9/12/2021).

"Today we are at a point where the eradication of corruption is still far from expectations," said KOMPAK activist Leo Himan in his written press statement.

KOMPAK assesses that government supervision has not been effective, the bureaucratic system continues to open up opportunities for corruption, while politicians and businessmen continue to maintain special relationships that often lead to conflicts of interest.

The anti-corruption system and efforts to eradicate corruption are also considered to be still far behind in Papua. Especially from the real need to eliminate corruption which is increasingly complex in nature and pattern.

“Eradication of corruption in Papua is like a baby learning to crawl. The public certainly hopes that there will be a big leap in dealing with corruption in Papua,” said another activist, Luis Raiwaki.

He said corruption is the real enemy of development. The government, the private sector, political institutions and politicians, as well as the wider community need to see corruption as a common problem that must be continuously fought. Therefore, the public must report to law enforcement officers if they find indications of corruption by irresponsible persons.

He continued, KOMPAK demanded improvements and completion of several things. First, a deeper investigation into the alleged misappropriation of the XX National Sports Week funds in Papua, October 2021.

"In her statement, the Minister of Finance (Menkeu) Sri Mulyani Indrawati revealed the amount of PON funds from 2018-2021, if the total reached approximately Rp. 10.431 trillion. A very large fund but leaves a lot of problems. Especially the arrears in payment of salaries for volunteers, the media, and other third parties," said Luis.

Second, KOMPAK also urges the KPK to arrest state officials suspected of corruption in the Special Autonomy Fund (Otsus).

KOMPAK also asked the Governor of Papua, Lukas Enembe, the Papuan DPR, and law enforcement officials to join hands to eradicate deep-rooted corruption in Papua.

Another KOMPAK activist, Gifli Buiney, said his party would monitor the process and the seriousness of the parties involved in eradicating corruption in Papua.

"KOMPAK will again hold street protests, as evidence of the people's concern in overseeing the resolution of corruption cases in Papua," he said.
