This week, Papuan PON Torches and Pentecostal Torches Arrive in Wamena

This week, Wamena, the capital of Jayawijaya Regency, will be a special Sunday. The reason is that in the near future there will be two torch relay events that will cross the city of Wamena Jayawijaya, Papua.

Namely the XX Papua PON fire torch which is scheduled to arrive in Wamena on Wednesday (29/9/2021). While the other torch was the Pentecostal fire procession which left the city of Wamena on Thursday (30/9/2021), after a series of events for the 50th anniversary of the Pentecostal Church in Indonesia (GPdI) in Jayawijaya Regency and the central highlands of Papua which will be centered in Wamena on 30 September 2021,

"This week Wamena was passed by two torches, the PON torch and the Pentecostal fire torch in the framework of the 50th anniversary of the GPdI in Jayawijaya and the central mountains of Papua," said Rev. Aleksander Mauri, Chair of the Jayawijaya GPdI Jubilee Committee, Sunday (26/9/2021) .

The Pentecostal Fire Carnival which will be released at the same time as the PON fire will not only commemorate the GPdI Jubilee in Jayawijaya but also commemorate the 73rd anniversary of GPdI in Papua and 100 GPdI in Indonesia.

"So the Pentecostal torch has been around Indonesia since March 30 last year and yesterday in Bali March 30, 2021. This was announced by the president. From Bali to Papua, the last carnival around Papua from Puncak Jaya is in Wamena at this time,” said Pdt. Mauri.

The pentecostal torch will then return to Jayapura, leaving Wamena on 30 September 2021 at the same time as the Papua PON fire procession. It is said that this time equation is not a setting, it's just that the GPdI Anniversary falls on the same date.

“Later on September 30, previously the Pentecostal torch stopped at the Jayawijaya Regent's office to pray there. After that, go to Sentani Jayapura, and have a birthday event at GPdI Elsadai Wamena as a historical site for GPdI.”

The meaning behind the Pentecostal fire procession, he said, is that the Pentecostal church is synonymous with fire, where the day of Pentecost occurs, when the holy spirit descends in the form of flames.

“So the history of the Pentecostal Church is identical to the Pentecostal Fire. So our theme for this year's GPdI anniversary is to ignite the pentecostal fire in Papua. So the fire is identical with the power of the holy spirit which burns every evil deed so that we are cleansed from sin and purified,” he explained.

Meanwhile apart, Rev. Matthew Himan, representative of the Regional Assembly (MD) of the GPdI Papua in Wamena, said he was grateful to God, because the GPdI of the central mountains has reached the age of 50 which will be celebrated on Thursday (30/9/2021).

"Praise God, it is amazing when the evangelism through the GPdI organization is in Wamena and opens many congregations through services and there are already many regional assemblies present in this central mountain," said Rev. Himan.

For this reason, his party in the MD-GPdI management, in this case as an advisor, invites God's people in Jayawijaya to be more serious and active in serving God. “Because we have entered a golden year in pastoral ministry.”
