Urges of Religious Leaders to Completely Investigate Corruption in Papua

A religious figure, Father Yohanes Jonga, urged the KPK to investigate allegations of corruption in the use of PON funds to Papua's special autonomy (otsus) funds.

Father John Jonga, who had received the 2009 Yap Thiam Hien award, said that the KPK or other law enforcement officers do not have to worry about auditing the entire use of the budget. "So that between Papua and Jakarta, there is no mutual suspicion. So that PON volunteers do not become victims," he said, Tuesday, December 8, 2021.

Even the Minister of Finance (Menkeu) Sri Mulyani Indrawati once revealed the amount of PON funds from 2018-2021, when the total reached approximately Rp. 10.431 trillion.

“I think the Papuan people already know. Even thousands of volunteers condemned the promises made by the PON committee. Well, they are demanding the rights promised by the committee," he said.

So, he said, before having a further impact, regarding the use of PON funds should be investigated by the authorities. "If the police don't move, I think the center (Jakarta), whether the Attorney General's Office, BPK, and others will investigate this," he continued.

Father Jonga explained that corruption in Papua is not a new problem. "Corruptors move freely, are not ashamed, have no sense of responsibility, do not have the conscience to account for regional development funds," he explained.

He suspects that the protracted handling of corruption in Papua has given rise to indications of the involvement of law enforcement officers in the vortex of corruption.

"For example, in Keerom Regency, it is known that there is corruption in the construction of the road from Defarmo to Towe Hitam worth billions, the funny thing is, after arriving at the Prosecutor's Office, the investigation process was even silent (stayed)," he explained.

Due to the actions of corruptors, the suffering of the people is increasing. "In the end it became a problem that piled up, and caused movement everywhere."

Regarding the submission of the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Mahfud MD, in mid-2021, that the alleged corruption of the Special Autonomy funds was already under investigation, Father John Djonga asked that this was not just a promise.

"What was promised by Mahfud MD must be moved together. We church leaders, youth, are ready to support what has been conveyed by the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs," he said.

He invited various parties to participate in urging the government to uncover 10 major corruption cases in Papua that Mahfud MD had announced. "Don't let the 10 major corruption cases be kept by the state. This is dangerous for national unity," he said.

Allegations of budget embezzlement in Papua are said to be open. Based on a search by the Supreme Audit Agency (BPK), it was found that waste and ineffectiveness in the use of a fantastic budget were found. In addition, there are also mark ups or price inflations in the procurement of a number of public facilities in the easternmost province of Indonesia.

The National Police Intelligence and Security Agency (Baintelkam) in the 2021 Police Leadership Meeting (Rapim) even made it clear that more than Rp1.8 trillion was found in misappropriation of funds in Papua when a presentation was broadcast on the Tribrata TV Youtube channel.
