West Sumatra is one of the provinces in Indonesia that provides its support for Papua to host the XX National Sports Week (PON) event. The province with the nickname Ranah Minang does not only provide support so that the implementation of PON XX can run successfully in the Land of Papua. However, they also carry out a personal mission.
Although still constrained by the budget from the local government, West Sumatra will bring a complete contingent of 186 athletes from the initial number of 133 athletes.
"We have agreed because we West Sumatra were the first to be mentioned by Papua in 2014 to determine the host of PON, we West Sumatra are the first supporters of Papua Province. With the lack of budget, we hope that it will not be an excuse to send according to the athletes who qualify, because somehow we reduce it means we reduce the sense of togetherness. So West Sumatra will send 186 athletes who were originally 133. We will send them intact because we support Papua as a good host, "said Chairman of the West Sumatra KONI, Syaiful, to the Jubi media crew, Friday (9/4/2021).
West Sumatra Province has set a target to improve its ranking in XX PON. They aim to finish in the top 10 with the hope of winning 16 gold medals. Even so, West Sumatra hopes that the host of Papua can soar in the standings for the PON XX medal later.
"We will participate in 29 sports in 4 clusters. Our target is to get 16 gold medals, our count is in the top 10. Because in West Java we are ranked 11 with 14 gold. We don't want to be in the top 10 with 16 gold too much. With the record that Papua can skyrocket more so that we can slip between the numbers that we can take, "he said.
The West Sumatra contingent is scheduled to arrive in Papua on 27 September for the XX PON event.
"We are according to the schedule starting September 27, there are already people who come. And even if possible we can adjust it to our budget, our plan is actually 1 month before XX PON we will be in Papua at our own expense. "Hopefully the Provincial Government of West Sumatra can grant our budget a month before our PON is already in Papua, because after all West Sumatra is part of the support for Papua," he hoped.
PON XX in Tanah Papua is believed to be the biggest sports event in Indonesia and even in the Asia Pacific region. While giving direction at the opening of Chef de Mission (CdM) meeting II (second) at Suni Lake Garden, Wednesday (7/4/21), Deputy V for Political, Legal, Security and Human Rights, Presidential Staff Office (KSP) Jaleswari Pramodhawardani, admitted he was impressed by the readiness of Papua Province as the host.
Jaleswari is even optimistic that the XX PON event in Tanah Papua will become the biggest sports event in the Asia Pacific region. Not only that, he suggested that Papua could also host international sporting events in the future.
"PON XX in Papua will be the largest sports event in the Asia Pacific region. The sports facilities that have been built in 4 clusters are also the most comprehensive in the Pacific apart from the Australian Olympic facilities. We are of the view that Papua is not only ready to host PON and Peparnas, but is also ready to serve other international and regional sporting events in the future, even Papua is ready to become a hub in the Pacific region as well as Singapore in ASEAN, "said Jaleswari.
