TNI Encourages Papuans to Utilize Local Food |
A number of environmental activists in Papua initiated June 21 as a celebration of Sago Day which began in 2017. The IV celebration this year was held at the Hirosi Nature Tourism Field, Sentani District, Jayapura Regency, Sunday (21/6).
Representing Danrem 172 / PWY, Chief of Staff Korem 172 / PWY Col. Inf Achmad Fauzi, S.IP., M.M. when attending the activity conveyed that the Papuan people can utilize local food.
"In this co-19 Pandemic era, it also affected the scarcity and price of basic foodstuffs on the market. This should not be a problem for the people of Papua. Because we have abundant natural resources, "Kasrem said.
According to him, Papua has a very large area of land so that people need to be educated to return to farming to plant local food seeds, both long-term and short-term.
In line with the theme of the celebration of sago day IV this year, Back to Sagu, his party invites people to re-use local food, especially Sago.
"Sago is a staple food for a long time for the people of Papua. Sago is also a clothing, food, shelter, water and energy. For that, let us not only cut down, but also plant for our children and grandchildren in the future, "Kasrem said.
He hopes that the community can also develop sago so that it has high economic value.
"We have to be able to introduce and even develop sago so that it can be sold to other regions or can be exported and make sago as an attraction from Papua," Kasrem said.
"I also hope that this good thing can be a concern for young people as the next generation to be able to love and develop the potential of the region, especially sago for food security in Papua," he added.
Meanwhile, Head of Papua Province Forestry and Environment Yan Yap L. Ormusrray, SH, M.Sc., said that the support of the Papua provincial government for sago is very large because sago is considered a plant that lives in natural forests, so sago is a top priority in agriculture sector.
"Don't be ashamed of sago because this sago is extraordinary, currently sago has been developed in the southern part of Papua, Merauke, Mappi whose seeds are taken from the sago forest. If we plant sago we can get a lot of water different from oil palm which sucks a lot of water. So let's plant sago so we don't experience drought, "Yan said.
