Youth Leader Sarmi: Until Whenever We Will Remain Like This If Corruption in the Land of Papua Fails to Eradicate

Papuan youth in Sarmi Regency have full hopes for the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) in an effort to rid the land of Papua from the corrupt behavior of regional officials. Because if the KPK fails to tackle corrupt behavior in their area, they will be the most affected.

This was stated by Benyamin Tiris, General Chair of the Philoktov Association for Family Harmony (IKKBP) in Abepura, Sunday (27/11/2022). This young man from Sarmi Regency asked the Central Government through the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) to be more serious in handling corruption cases in Papua, especially in thoroughly investigating the corruption allegations against Papua Governor Lukas Enembe.

"Our hope for Papuans is that if Mr. Lukas Enembe is innocent, you will be proactive towards the state. We don't need to throw the ball at each other, blame each other. Handling Mr. Lukas too, don't involve certain politics, later we, the small community below, will get the effect, "asked Benyamin.

Benyamin revealed that the large amount of funds disbursed by the Central Government to Papua during the Special Autonomy Era Volume One had not had a positive impact on the people of Papua, especially for low-income people.

According to Benyamin, the obstacle lies in the transparency of the management of the Special Autonomy funds. This is due to weak oversight of budget management. Weak oversight, he continued, left regional officials free to commit fraud.

"If (budget management) is not transparent, how long will Papua be like this," said Benyamin.

Because of this, Benyamin suggested that in the era of Special Autonomy (Otsus) Volume Two, the Central Government or the Corruption Eradication Committee would also want to involve community components in the regions to participate in supervising. The community component that Benyamin is referring to is community leaders from traditional elements, churches, and youth organizations in the Papua region.

"I ask for Special Autonomy Volume Two, it is really controlled and involves elements within the Papuan community to participate in supervising it, so that the management of the Special Autonomy funds can be more transparent. The welfare of the common people is felt more, that is our hope, “said Benyamin.

The elements that need to be involved, said Benyamin, are up to the Central Government to determine and regulate. It could be religious leaders, traditional leaders, youth leaders and so on. The main thing, according to him, is that each component involved is not being selfish or prioritizing the interests of the group.

"Throw away we have selfishness. Let's not drop each other. We are working together for the benefit of the community, the common people who are the target beneficiaries of the Special Autonomy Fund," Benyamin pleaded.
