Jayawijaya dragon fruit farmers supply market demand

Dragon fruit farmers in Jayawijaya Regency, Papua Mountains Province are motivated to fill and even meet market demand or the demands of a number of supermarkets in the city center.

Head of the Horticulture Division (Kabid) at the Jayawijaya Agriculture Service (Distan), Yus Kenelak in Wamena, Sunday, said that initially the community only planted dragon fruit in the yard for decoration and personal consumption.

"Previously, the community only planted one or two beds in their yard, but after they saw that the income from red fruit was quite good, now they are starting to clear land on a hectare scale," he said.

He ensured that most of the districts in Jayawijaya Regency had land that was very supportive for the development of dragon fruit so that the government would also encourage people to grow the plant.

"We don't support it in the form of funds but provide dragon fruit seeds to be distributed to farmers. This year there will be 100 or 500 dragon fruit cuttings. If farmers want to cultivate it regularly, we are ready to help them," he said.

Currently there are not many dragon fruit farmers so that market needs are still being met. The dragon fruit cultivation group, which is still producing dragon fruit, is in the Siepkossy District.

"Training for farmers starting from the planting stage, maintenance so that quality production results, including how to market their farmers' agricultural products, we do," he said.

So far, to meet market demand, usually traders or several supermarkets bring in from Jayapura via flights.

This causes the price of dragon fruit to be quite expensive or in the price range of Rp. 60,000 to Rp. 100,000 per fruit because it is calculated based on the scales of the plane, the transport and the profit earned by the trader.

"From Agro, those who usually order, they call us, we immediately convey it and for them to come to buy at the farmers," he said.

Although the people of Jayawijaya are generally more used to developing cassava and vegetable gardens, the agriculture service motivated them to develop other commodities such as dragon fruit and strawberries from Jayawijaya.
