UN: No human rights violations in Indonesia

The Human Rights Council of the United Nations (UN) did not record any violations in Indonesia, particularly in the spotlight on human rights violations in Papua.

Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs (Menko Polhukam) Mahfud MD said the high commissioner of the Human Rights Council highlighted the handling of human rights issues in 21 countries, but Indonesia was not included in it. The UN Human Rights Council conveyed it in the 50th Session of the UN Human Rights Council Session which he attended in Geneva, Switzerland on Monday (13/6).

"If you open the website of the UN Human Rights Council, the UN Human Rights High Commission whose speech yesterday did not exist, Indonesia is free from the Papua problem, which is encouraging at the UN Human Rights Council there are no records of human rights violations in Indonesia," Mahfud said in a virtual press conference. , Thursday (16/6).

The former judge of the Constitutional Court revealed that for the past three years or since 2020, Indonesia has never been mentioned about human rights issues in the UN Human Rights Council Session. For him, this shows progress and communicates proportionally regarding the protection and enforcement of human rights.

On the other hand, the high commissioner of the UN Human Rights Council gave his appreciation to the Attorney General's Office (AGO) regarding efforts to resolve the case of Paniai's gross human rights violations. Meanwhile, the United Nations highlighted 21 other countries, but Indonesia was not discussed like a crowd on social media.

"But outside of that, it seems as if human rights violations are in the spotlight of the United Nations, there is no UN's spotlight," said Mahfud.

According to him, the Paniai case is a serious human rights case and the legal process has ended because it has been handed over to the court. Meanwhile, dozens of serious human rights cases that occurred in the past are very difficult to resolve.

“The Paniai case is the only case of serious human rights violations recommended by Komnas HAM, which occurred in the Jokowi era, the other 12 occurred in the past and are difficult to resolve. We will immediately finish this one (Paniai), "said Mahfud.

Even so, Mahfud acknowledged that there were reports from various non-governmental organizations (NGOs) regarding allegations of human rights violations in Indonesia which were submitted through special procedures mandate holders (SPMH). As one of the intellectual units under the UN Human Rights Council that receives reports of alleged human rights violations from various countries, SPMH will then provide clarification to the government of that country.

"Like Indonesia, there are many reports from NGOs, report to SPMH, then SPMH announces that there is a report. It's not from the Human Rights Council, it's from SPMH. The report means to inform the government, then we answer, oh yes, it's over. So there's no problem , there are none," he said.

Mahfud promised the international community would immediately ratify the Convention on the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance. Various efforts to encourage the DPR to immediately discuss the ratification.
