The government of Kaimana Regency, West Papua opens investment space in the nutmeg plantation sector to national entrepreneurs and investors from abroad to encourage economic growth in the region.
Kaimana Regent Freddy Thie in Manokwari, Thursday, said his staff welcomed the plan by the Investment Minister and the Head of the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) Bahlil Lahadalia to bring in investors to manage nutmeg plantations in West Papua.
This was stated by Bahlil during the Investment Sector Working Meeting with all levels of local government in West Papua at the Swissbell Hotel, Manokwari, Wednesday (15/6).
"We have carried out a program of planting a million nutmeg trees carried out by the previous regent. This means that we are serious about developing nutmeg commodities," said Freddy.
According to Freddy, the program to plant a million nutmeg trees will continue during his tenure with Deputy Regent Hasbulla Furuada considering that nutmeg has become a leading commodity in the Kaimana area and several surrounding districts such as Fakfak and Teluk Wondama.
Until now, he said, nutmeg production is still managed directly by the indigenous forest owners in the Kaimana area.
The Kaimana Regency Government hopes that in the future the management of nutmeg plantations will no longer be traditional, but will be carried out on a large and modern scale so as to provide more benefits and economic value to the local community.
"The price of nutmeg from year to year is very stable, if development is carried out in this sector, I am sure nutmeg farmers will become successful farmers," he said.
Currently, the price of nutmeg in Kaimana reaches Rp. 40,000 to Rp. 45,000 per kilogram. While the selling price of nutmeg can reach Rp. 200 thousand per kilo gram.
Freddy is optimistic that the large-scale development of nutmeg in Kaimana will be supported by the land-owning community, considering that the profits that can be obtained from this trading business are very promising and raise the welfare of the local community.
"With the very high profit from the sale of nutmeg products, of course we will gladly welcome investors who come to Kaimana to develop nutmeg plantations," said Freddy.
