Jayapura Joint High School turns sago into ice cream

The Joint High School in Jayapura City, Papua processes sago, which is a staple local food ingredient for people in Papua, into ice cream which is one of the Pancasila Profile Strengthening Projects.

"We will try it with sago ice cream entrepreneurship, which promotes local wisdom," said Head of the Joint High School Sandra Titihalawa when met by a number of journalists with representatives from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology in Jayapura City, Papua, Tuesday.

In addition to promoting local wisdom, Sandra said that through the activity of making sago ice cream, students learn to have a Pancasila student profile, such as mutual cooperation and creativity.

There are six elements in the profile of Pancasila Students, namely faith, fear of God Almighty and noble character, global diversity, independence, mutual cooperation, critical reasoning, and creativity.

"We focus on the learning process (making ice cream made from sago), there is the value of mutual cooperation," he said.

The students were grouped and then together they learned to make sago ice cream by being trained and accompanied by the teacher. Students are also taught about profit calculation and marketing methods to customers.

One of the class X students, Miss Raisa Papuana Paisei (15) admitted that she was initially surprised and doubtful when the teacher asked students to make sago ice cream, because they had never known or heard information that ice cream could be made from sago.

"At first I was surprised, it was possible to make ice cream from sago. But, the teacher said it could," said Nona, who made sago ice cream with her friends.

However, the board member of the Intra-School Student Organization (OSIS) said the teacher convinced students that sago could be processed into ice cream to make ice cream, and after making it, students could see real results in the form of ice cream from sago.

Nona learned how to work together in groups and innovate that sago can not only be made into papeda, a food in the form of sago porridge typical of Maluku and Papua, but can also be processed into other products, namely ice cream.

Another student from class X, Billy Ruland (17) admitted that the project of making sago ice cream was very beneficial for students. Besides being fun to learn new things that sago can be processed into food other than papeda, the project also provides insight to equip students' knowledge about entrepreneurship.

Sago ice cream has the opportunity to become a business in the future if it is cultivated properly, and becomes the capital for students to become entrepreneurs so that in the future they can be independent.

"Making ice cream, we can trade like selling, we have our own income, add to the student council money," said the student council member.
