Yan Mandenas: Don't Look at the Expansion of Papua from a Political Perspective

Member of Commission I DPR RI, Yan Mandenas appealed to the Papuan people to welcome the formation of a new province in Papua which has been programmed by the central government according to the aspirations of the Papuan people.

Legislators from Papua assessed that at this time the Papuan people were more appropriate to prepare themselves than to take part in demonstrations against some groups which were carried out for the interests of certain groups.

Yan said the central government had given extraordinary attention to the Papuan people through the implementation of the special autonomy law and now the formation of three new autonomous regions from the planned five provinces.

"I hope that all elements of the Papuan people, Papuan political elites in Papua and outside Papua, so that we jointly succeed in the formation of a new autonomous region (DOB) for the prosperity and future of the Papuan people," said Mandenas, Sunday 22 May 2022.

He said, the Papuan people must look at the expansion of the Papua province from an economic perspective because the benefits of the expansion of the province in Papua include equitable development, increased welfare, accelerated infrastructure development and shortens the vulnerability of inter-central and regional government control as well as facilitates community mobility and activities.

“I have repeatedly said that we accept expansion by looking at it from an economic perspective, not from a political perspective. Because the consequences from a political perspective will remain purely political consumption so that it becomes the pros and cons of various demonstrations by certain groups at this time," he added.

Mandenas admitted that the DPR RI had received a Presidential Letter (Surpres) from the government regarding the discussion of the three New Autonomous Regions (DOB) in Papua. Namely, related to the Draft Law (RUU) regarding the Province of South Papua (Wilayah Adat Ha Anim), the Bill on the Province of Central Papua (Wilayah Adat Mee Pago), and the Bill on the Province of Papua Central Mountains (Wilayah Adat Lapago).

The Surpres was given to the DPR after being ratified as a draft proposal for the DPR's initiative in the Plenary Session on Tuesday, April 12, 2022. With the Surpres, the President of the Republic of Indonesia assigned the relevant ministries/institutions as government representatives to discuss together with the DPR's Completeness Toolkit (AKD) assigned to the Meeting. The Consultative Body (Bamus) of the DPR RI.

“The DPR has also received points that will be discussed in the form of a Problem Inventory List (DIM) for the Bill for the Establishment of new autonomous regions. Several ministers have been sent, such as the Minister of Home Affairs, the Minister of National Development Planning Agency, the Minister of PAN-RB, and the Minister of Finance who will participate in discussing with the DPR," he said.
