Jayapura Regent Matthew Awoitauw and a number of members of the Papuan People's Assembly (MRP) met with the President of the Republic of Indonesia Joko Widodo at the presidential palace of the Republic of Indonesia, Friday (20/5).
The goal is to convey and explain directly to President Jokowi, about how important the Papua New Guinea is for Papua and West Papua.
It is said, the formation of the Papua New Guinea is considered to bring public services closer to the community so that it can be a solution to accelerate welfare in Papua and West Papua.
“So far, geographical constraints have been the main challenge in providing adequate public services for the people in Papua. No matter how much the funds are lowered in special autonomy (Otsus), but if the geography is difficult, as it is now, it will still experience extraordinary obstacles. Therefore, the new autonomous region is a solution to accelerate the welfare of Papua and West Papua," he said, quoted from the Presidential Secretariat's Youtube channel, Friday (20/5).
At the same time a number of members, the MRP and the West Papuan People's Assembly also met with President Jokowi to clarify the implementation of Law Number 2 of 2021 concerning Special Autonomy in the Provinces of Papua and the New Guinea of South Papua, Central Highlands Papua and Central Papua.
According to Mathius, the plan to form a new autonomous region is a genuine aspiration of Papuans who have been fighting for it for a long time. South Papua, for example, is said to have struggled for 20 years.
“So this is not something that just appeared suddenly. But these are pure aspirations, both from South Papua and Tabi, Saereri as well as Lapago and Mee Pago," he said.
He continued, regarding the aspirations for the formation of the Papua New Guinea, it was encouraged based on the location of the customary area, not demonstrations on the street. The Papuan people hope how the new autonomous regions in the future can be their hope to accelerate prosperity.
Furthermore, the Special Autonomy Law will bind all communities throughout the land of Papua so that there is legal certainty to manage the spaces owned by indigenous peoples based on the seven customary areas in Papua.
"We need certainty. Therefore, if the division is a matter of government administration, Papua is bound by the Special Autonomy Law," he added. Therefore, the Special Autonomy Law will also provide legal certainty for the management space, mapping rights for customary areas. With this legal certainty, it is hoped that it will solve land problems in Papua.
"The Papuan conflict is actually a land issue, therefore there needs to be certainty here and he can resolve, reduce problems in Papua, and the certainty is only through the Special Autonomy Law," he concluded.
