Papuan Human Rights Defenders Appreciate the Settlement of Group War in Wamena

Efforts to resolve the dispute involving two community groups from Nduga Regency and Lannya Jaya Regency in Jayawijaya Regency were appreciated by
Executive Director of the Foundation for Justice and Human Integrity in Papua (World Human Rights Defenders) Theo Hesegem.

Theo said that the settlement efforts carried out by both the Indonesian National Police and the Regional Government in conflict, including involving figures, were the right and quick steps.

He said that if the problem dragged on, it would lead to new, wider problems, especially if the number of fatalities increased.

"I appreciate the quick resolution of the security forces, both TNI and Polri, including the Regents whose citizens are in conflict in Jayawijaya. We don't want the conflict to spread and there will be more victims," said Theo Hesegem in Wamena, Wednesday (19/1/2022).

It is said, involving leaders, both traditional religions and local governments, is a good solution. He asked that no more similar problems occur in the future, the Regent of each region whose people are in Jayawijaya Regency should give an appeal so as not to create conflict.

He also reminded all people who came to Jayawijaya Regency to respect and not make trouble, including the people of Nduga Regency who are currently in conflict.

"All residents from other regencies in the Papua region who are in Jayawijaya Regency are asked to respect and help build Jayawijaya Regency, don't create conflicts. I hope that each of the Regents will advise their people in Jayawijaya, so that the people know themselves, if they are in other areas they will not create conflicts. I want to say that the Nduga people in Jayawijaya Regency are refugees. So it shouldn't be a problem," he said.

He said again, Jayawijaya Regency is the Parent Regency for other regions in the Central Mountains region. So if there is a conflict, especially with other areas that become the New Regency, it will certainly have an impact. The distribution flow in several areas is still through Jayawijaya Regency. So he emphasized again not to create conflicts that would actually be detrimental. Peace is more important than conflict.

"The Nduga people here are looking for a living to evacuate here, so they can't cause problems, they can't create conflicts, because it's going to be difficult here, so they have to hold back, don't create problems. We can no longer make room for other people to create a conflict, realizing a peace and friendship is more important than creating a space for conflict," he concluded.

To note, the conflict between two groups of residents from Lannya Jaya Regency and Nduga Regency based on the police started from a family issue. Failed to finish, the problem even led to attacks each other until there were casualties.

The two groups finally agreed to make peace with the traditional procession and the payment of a fine of 2.5 billion and 20 pigs by the Lanny Jaya community group to the Nduga family as victims. The dispute resolution was carried out at the Sinapuk Wamena field, Jayawijaya Regency.
