Deadly Clashes in Papua, TNI Green Python Troops intervene



A number of Army soldiers who are members of the Company Level Unit (SSK) are alerted following deadly clashes between residents in Jayawijaya Regency, Papua, Sunday 9 January 2022.

In an official press release from the XVII/Cenderawasih Military Regional Command (Kodam XVII/Cenderawasih), the SSK members who were alerted came from the Military District Command 1702/Jayawijaya (Kodim 1702/Jayawijaya) and the Infantry Battalion 756/Wimane Sili (Yonif 756/WS).

The clashes that occurred involved two community groups from the Lanny Jaya tribe and the Nduga tribe, in Wouma District, Jayawijaya Regency.
 
The dispute between these groups broke out because of accusations from the Lanny Jaya tribe that the Nduga tribe had killed a citizen.

As a result of this clash, one resident died. Meanwhile, 22 other residents were injured. Material losses also occurred, including 35 houses, four motorbikes and two cars, along with the burning deer.
 
In order to reduce the conflict, members of the TNI and Polri held a meeting between the two groups of residents who were at war with each other. The meeting was also attended by the Jayawijaya Regent, members of Kodim 1702, Infantry Battalion 756/Wimane Sili and the Jayawijaya Resort Police.

The commander of Kodim (Dandim) 1702/Jayawijaya, Lt. Col. Inf. Arif Budi Situmeang, confirmed that his party would continue to make every effort to stop the feud between the two groups of residents. Arif also called for this problem to be resolved with a cool head and kinship.

"Let's stop this dispute so that there will be no more bloodshed from both sides. If there is a problem, let's solve it together as a family because we are all family," said Dandim 1702/Jayawijaya in front of thousands of residents of Jayawijaya Regency.

The problems don't stop there. The family of the deceased on behalf of Yonas Kelnea (48), said that the victim died as a result of being shot by the security forces. In this case, members of the Jayawijaya Police.
 
To find out, the TNI, Polri, religious leaders, and observers of Human Rights (HAM) in the Central Highlands of Papua, moved to the Wamena Regional General Hospital (RSUD) to ascertain the condition of the victim's body.

After a joint examination, it turned out that the cause of death was not a gunshot wound. However, there were stab wounds to the victim's head and back.

In addition, there were also three wounds from being stabbed by an arrow in the victim's neck. After checking, the group immediately went to the funeral home to provide an explanation to the family.
