As a Hub for Eastern Indonesia, the Port of Depapre will serve pioneering ship traffic in the Papua and surrounding areas

Minister of Transportation Budi Karya Sumadi stated that the Depapre Port in Jayapura Regency, Papua, would become a hub in eastern Indonesia. The Depapre Port will serve container activities and pioneer passenger ship traffic across regions in Papua and its surroundings.

"We hope that all stakeholders from ministries and institutions, local governments, and other related elements will jointly play an active role and collaborate in efforts to improve the performance of the Depapre Port," said Budi Karya in his statement, Tuesday, January 11, 2022.

Depapre Port was built from 2015 to 2020 by the Ministry of Transportation. Located in Teluk Tanah, this port requires an investment of Rp. 175 billion from the state budget.

Budi Karya stated that the land acquisition for the port has been carried out in stages from 2007 to 2013 with an area of 24.83 hectares of the total requirement of 74 hectares. Meanwhile, the post-development reclamation process has been completed on an area of 15.67 hectares.

In accordance with the National Port Master Plan, the Depapre Port will continue to be developed. Budi Karya claims this port has a strategic location because it faces directly the Pacific Ocean which is the gateway for international trade, especially in the Asia Pacific region.

The government, he said, was building Jalan Sentani Depapre as access to the port to facilitate traffic from the land side. Meanwhile, in 2021, the Depapre Port has started serving new sea toll routes connecting the Papua and West Papua regions.

Budi Karya explained that Jayapura Regency as a development center in Papua will become a new economic center. In addition to the Depapre Port, he explained, Jayapura has Sentani Airport in Jayapura.

He hopes that the existence of transportation nodes from sea to air transportation can facilitate the delivery of Papua's leading commodities for export and domestic needs. "Papua has a lot of potential for commodities, ranging from fish, seaweed, wood, and so on," he said.
