The action for the liberation of Papua did not necessarily run smoothly, even though there were ups and downs between groups that actually carried the same mission. The West Melanesian Republic group also raised its voice regarding the commemoration of December 1 which is claimed to be the day of independence for Papua.
Herman Wanggai, as one of the leaders of the struggle, revealed that every movement associated with the Morning Star Flag was a mistake that had been going on for decades. According to him, the Morning Star symbol is full of foreign political content and does not reflect the spirit of the Papuan movement itself.
"The Morning Star is a symbol full of political interests. If you look at its history, the Morning Star is only a tool created by the Dutch government decades ago, and there should be no pride in it because it does not reflect the spirit of the Papuan movement,"
Herman then quipped at the Papuan liberation movement activists who are passionate about the Morning Star symbol, according to him, if this continues, the group should press the Dutch government.
"If you really want the Morning Star, then ask the Dutch government, not the United Nations or other world organizations. Because December 1 was the promise of the Dutch government which in the end failed to be carried out,"
The Papuan activist, who currently lives in America, said that the movement would only be in vain because it collided with the situation and facts. He also quoted the statement of the Dutch King Willem Alexander who once expressed his apology for doing colonialism during colonialism.
“Moreover, the Dutch government itself has admitted its mistake with a direct apology regarding the colonial past. So what will the struggle of the Morning Star group be like now? These groups will not find success.”
At the end of his opportunity, Herman emphasized that the movement that was purely carried out by Papuans was the Republic of West Melanesian with the Bintang flag
