A nickel mine located in the Gag Islands, Raja Ampat, West Papua, managed by PT Gag Nickel has had a huge impact on the local economy during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as increasing the local area's own revenue (PAD) up to tens of billions of which have been absorbed. This was said by Yulinus Thebu, a member of the MRPB and representative of the indigenous people of Raja Ampat.
Yulinus Thebu said that for approximately two years the people of Raja Ampat had experienced an economic crisis due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, but this did not have a broad impact on the people who inhabit the Gag Islands. Although a number of tourist attractions and inns are sluggish and even closed due to a lack of local and foreign tourists visiting Raja Ampat due to the pandemic, the presence of nickel mines actually helps the community's economy to continue to grow.
It is also said that the presence of a nickel mine in Raja Ampat where almost all of the workers come from the community in the Gag Islands and its surroundings. The mine is also sufficient to help residents in terms of education by establishing a number of schools and providing scholarship assistance to outstanding students and underprivileged students through the CSR company PT Gag Nickel as the manager of the mine.
The distribution of royalties both to the Raja Ampat Regional Government and to the community, especially the indigenous people of the Kawe Tribe, the Maya, the Kawe Tribe in Selpele Village and the Salio Tribe can be accommodated. The Raja Ampat DPRD has enacted a regional regulation to regulate it so that in the future it will be beneficial for indigenous peoples.
Office Manager of PT Gag Nickel, Ruddy Sumual, when contacted on Monday (28/02/2022), said that the company would open a mine-based tourism site. Local and foreign tourists, apart from enjoying nature tourism, can also enjoy the nickel mining process. This includes the conservation of protected leatherback turtles.
Regarding the impact of environmental damage, Ruddy Sumual added that marine sedimentation occurs outside the mining area. All nickel mining activities on Gag Island are carried out in accordance with the AMDAL and get permission from the Ministry of the Environment, so the government has a strong commitment to preserving Raja Ampat. Mining will not interfere with the tourism and fisheries sector in Raja Ampat.
The presence of nickel mines in Raja Ampat has existed since the 1960s. Mining is managed by several mining companies until the exploitation process is managed by PT Gag Nickel through a contract of work permit which has been going on for five years.
