BI Predicts Papuan Economy to Increase in 2022

Bank Indonesia predicts that the 2022 economy will increase by 3-4 percent compared to the previous year.

Head of Bank Indonesia Papua Province Representative, Naek Tigor Sinaga assessed that the impact of the new variant of the COVID-19 virus, Omicron, would not affect the economy in Papua.

"The impact of Omicron is not predicted to be as severe as at the beginning of the pandemic, as predicted by the Governor of Bank Indonesia, in which national economic growth will occur at a national level of 4-5 percent," said Naek in Jayapura, Saturday, December 25, 2021.

BI believes that once the community is used to implementing health protocols and has carried out vaccines, the Papuan economy will begin to recover.

Naek explained that at the beginning of the pandemic there was a lot of fear that caused the stock price index to plummet and the exchange rate to soar.

"During the pandemic, the economy slumped above minus 5 percent. Then it was hit again by the Delta waves from July, August and now it is starting to adapt and is now being hit by the Omicron. The important thing is to stay safe and vaccinations must be carried out," he said.
