Various Papuan Leaders Ask Law Enforcers to Investigate the Use of Special Autonomy Funds

Various figures in Papua have asked law enforcers, namely the police, prosecutors, the Supreme Audit Agency (BPK), and the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) to investigate the use of Papua Special Autonomy funds over the previous 20 years.

Reporting from Tribunnews.com, the request was submitted by religious leaders, traditional leaders, and Papuan youth leaders in a press statement, Thursday (25/11/2021).

“Our request is for law enforcement to investigate the use of Papua Special Autonomy funds. This also applies to the Regional Police and the Papua High Court. There should be no omission," said (Ondoafi) the Chief of the Keerom Regency, Herman Yoku.

He said, allegations of corruption are increasingly prevalent in Papua. This situation cannot be allowed to continue. Law enforcement in Papua must be serious in handling the law, relating to allegations of corruption.

"Don't be impressed by the omission. If that happens, people will suspect that there is involvement of law enforcement officers behind it all," he said.

According to him, so far the people of Papua have not fully felt the benefits of the Special Autonomy funds.

“The people have suffered when the Special Autonomy funds were rolled out. They never feel the benefits," he said.

The chairman of the Barisan Merah Putih Papua Province, Max Abner Ohee, said the same thing.

He said law enforcement must be firm in investigating budget management in Papua.

According to him, the Papuan Police Chief, BPK and KPK should be able to take action and resolve cases of alleged corruption in Papua.

"Because acts like this torture the people, at least one or two cases can be brought up (investigated), so the public knows about it," said Max Abner Ohee.

Meanwhile, General Secretary of the Indonesian Kingmi Church, Yones Wenda said that his party had not experienced the Papua Special Autonomy Fund for 20 years.

He said, during the 20 years of Otsus Papua, the nominal disbursement of funds to the eastern province of Indonesia was quite large.

“However, we only hear the value, the money is not there (the benefits are not visible). Small communities have never felt it,” said Yones Wenda.

A number of these figures also argued that there should be a meeting between Papuan community leaders and the central government.

From that meeting, a rule was made, so that the benefits of the Special Autonomy Fund could be felt directly by the Papuan people.
