Social Minister Risma Visits Fast Boat Assembly for Papuans

Minister of Social Affairs Tri Rismaharini or Risma reviewed the construction of six speedboats for transportation for Papuans when visiting the Faculty of Engineering, Cendrawasih University, Friday, November 12, 2021.

The fast boat, which is the result of a collaboration between two campuses, namely the University of Cendrawasih and the Sepuluh November Institute of Surabaya (ITS), cannot be separated from Risma's initiative in responding to the difficulty of accessing Papuans with many geographical features in the form of mountains, rivers and seas.

"So far, the travel time from Mamberamo to Sentani takes two days, due to the winding conditions of the river. With this ship, it is hoped that it will be faster," Risma said in a statement, Saturday, November 13, 2021.

Present on the occasion were Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture (PMK) Muhadjir Effendy, Uncen Chancellor Apolo Safanpo, and the shipbuilding team. Risma was accompanied by the Director General of Social Empowerment and the Minister's Special Staff.

Risma and Muhadjir watched the ship which was almost finished in the backyard of the campus. In the early stages, six ships were produced.

"One ship is for the purpose of picking up school children. Then five units to be managed by the Indonesian Christian Foundation in Papua," said Risma. The purpose of this shipbuilding is to increase the accessibility and economic turnover of the local community. The shipbuilding is also based on the request of the community and local leaders.

During a visit several months earlier, a Papuan leader represented by Father Lipiyus Biniluk, Chair of the Papuan Religious Harmony Forum (FKUB), told Risma that residents need to improve access to water transportation, especially through rivers. This is because water transportation is considered the most effective in supporting daily activities and the economy of the community.

Upon this request, Risma responded quickly and held a meeting with the ITS leadership. The shipbuilding is carried out in synergy with Uncen and involves Papuan youth.

"The goal is for technology transfer to occur and the Papuan people can master technology," he said.

With the shipbuilding process in its final stages, Risma jokingly saw it as a birthday gift for ITS and Uncen who were both founded on November 10.

The synergy model in the discussion of ships will also be applied to other regions. The next opportunity will be given to other regions in Papua.

Ship assistance from the Ministry of Social Affairs does not stand alone and is not a discontinuous project. Risma ensured that she would continue to oversee until the beneficiaries could be independent.

"Later, if their fish catch is good, of course it must be managed with good management. Then they must form a cooperative. The cooperative will also manage basic necessities," he said.

Risma ensured that the government through the Ministry of Social Affairs would assist regions in Papua according to the needs and conditions of the local community. For example, Puncak Jaya is not provided with a ship, but GESITS assistance will be provided, namely a motor with battery power.

For the assistance of the Minister of Social Affairs, the Chairperson of the Papua FKUB, Pastor Lipiyus Biniluk, expressed his appreciation to the Minister of Social Affairs. "Remote areas in Papua can only be accessed by air or river. So this ship assistance is the right answer," said Lipiyus.
