The guests of the National Paralympic Week or Peparnas XVI Papua admitted that they were happy and satisfied to participate in the national level multi-pronged sports competition which was specifically for athletes with disabilities. They are also happy and impressed by the hospitality of the Papuan people.
South Kalimantan athletic athlete, Muhamad Husain, who came to Papua for the first time, was happy to be able to participate in the XVI Peparnas. "This is my first time to Papua," said Muhamad to Jubi in Sentani, the capital of Jayapura Regency, Wednesday (10/11/2021).
Husain explained that his perception of Papua changed when he set foot in Papua, because Papua is not what it is portrayed on social media. “People in Papua are very friendly and very kind. We are satisfied with the comfort and hospitality we received. The rude ones actually don't exist," said Husain.
On the sidelines of the competitions that he participated in, Husain took the time to walk and shop. On Wednesday, he wanted to find a souvenir to take home, and stop by where Papuan mamas sell.
“We stopped by to buy souvenirs from Mama Papua who sells noken and other decorations. Even though it is expensive, we have been to Papua once, when there is an event, we can come. Wherever we [go] we also bring [gifts] like this," he said.
Although Peparnas is a multi-pronged sports competition at the national level, the organization of the competition specifically for athletes with disabilities is not as lively as the implementation of the National Sports Week or PON XX Papua. The atmosphere around the Lukas Enembe Stadium during Peparnas was also less crowded than during the XX Papua PON.
Even so, Mama Yuli Auwe, who sells noken around the Lukas Enembe Stadium, admitted that she was proud that her merchandise was bought by Peparnas XVI Papua athletes. “Two days I was selling, there were no buyers. Today there are only three people who come shopping for noken, they are also athletes from outside Papua. I deliberately gave them cheaply,” he said.
