The expansion of Papua is a long-standing aspiration of the community

Minister of Home Affairs (Mendagri) Tito Karnavian revealed that people's aspirations regarding the division of Papua into six provinces kept coming.

"We feel the aspiration for the expansion is quite high," said Tito in a meeting with the Special Committee for the Revision of the Papua Special Autonomy Law at the Parliament Complex, Senayan, Jakarta.

Getting these aspirations, the central government also proposed six provinces. Among others, the Provinces of Southwest Papua, West Papua, Central Papua, Central Mountains, South Papua, and Papua Tabi Saireri. The proposal is still under debate.

Tito emphasized that the central government wants the expansion of the Papua region without having to go through the approval of the Papua People's Assembly (MRP) and the Papua People's Representative Council (DPRP).

"Why was this option presented, because the options in the MRP and DPRP were approved. If it is locked there, if the deadlock is there," he said.

Because basically, expansion was carried out in order to fulfill the mission of the central government in order to accelerate development and improve public services for the welfare of the people there.

However, he said, this option still takes into account the socio-cultural unity, customs, readiness of human resources, economic capacity, future developments, as well as the aspirations of the Papuan people through the MRP DPRP and other related parties.

"This all depends on our financial capacity, and also the results of this revision," he said.
