Sea Toll Roads Press Price Disparity in Eastern Indonesia

The government's efforts to reduce price disparities in eastern Indonesia through the Sea Highway are starting to bear fruit. This can be seen from the decline in prices in the Tanimbar Islands Regency, Maluku.

This was disclosed by the Head of the Saumlaki Class II Port Management Unit (UPP), Capt. Hasan Sadili, in a coordination and evaluation meeting with the regional government (Pemda) of the Tanimbar Islands Regency, Maluku regarding the Sea Highway. Discussions at the meeting were related to the optimization of return loads and lower prices of goods.

"Based on the data he received from the Tanimbar Islands Regency Industry, Trade and Manpower Office, the current price reduction ranges from 10 to 15 percent from the normal price in Saumlaki," said Capt. Hasan.

He added that the benefits of goods loaded on the Sea Toll Ship and sold to the public have been felt by the community, in the form of a price reduction. The synergy process, collaboration with the local government continues to make price reductions even more significant in the future.

For this reason, he asked business actors to fairly set the selling price of goods considering that business actors had already received a discount in terms of logistics costs with the Sea Highway.

Capt Hasan explained that overall the Sea Toll program is running well in terms of connectivity. However, one of the objectives is to reduce this price disparity, which must be the attention of the local government so that the benefits of the Sea Toll program can be of greater benefit to the community.

Return Load

In addition to discussing price disparities, the meeting also discussed the Tanimbar Islands Regional Government's request which was submitted to the Director of Traffic and Sea Transportation, Directorate General of Sea Transportation, Ministry of Transportation to re-provide subsidies for the return cargo of the Sea Toll Road in 2021. This is considered to be able to boost the return cargo of the Toll The sea becomes more leverage. This is because people's interest in sending the products they produce has increased.

"Because Saumlaki has a lot of regional superior potential such as copra, seaweed and wood where the amount of return cargo that can be sent to Surabaya for each voyage ranges from 20 to 30 containers," he said.
