PNG Denies Recruiting OPM Soldiers: Stop Spreading Rumors, We Have No Problem with Indonesia!

The Free Papua Barat Liberation Army (TPNPB) Organisai Papua Merdeka (OPM), which is affiliated with the Papua Armed Forces Group (KKB), had opened a military academy registration.

"The registration of the TPN-OPM Akmil is opened, the graduates directly face the TNI.

In the e flyer for the registration of the TPNPB OPM military academy, a number of Papuan KKB troops were seen with the Morning Star flag on the top.

"Together with OAP TPN Strong! Military Academy.

Registration at the Papuan Kodap branch is free of charge," said the e-flyer.

Not only distributing e flyers, in an effort to recruit members of the West Papua liberation army, the Papu KKB also spread propaganda on social media saying recruitment would be held in a number of provinces in Papua New Guinea (PNG), Indonesia's neighboring country.

However, this was directly denied by the PNG government.

As quoted from the Post Courier, the Commander of the Papua New Guinea Defense Forces Major General Gilbert Toropo stated that TPNPB recruitment in Papua New Guinea was nothing but social media propaganda.

Major General Gilbert Toropo, who visited the border area last week, told the Post Courier on 27 May 2021 that the recruitment allegations taking place in four of the country's provinces were just rumors on social media.

"I visited the area last week and it's quiet, this is great social media propaganda," he said.

He said PNG's stance was clear, there was no problem with Indonesia.

"We've spoken to Indonesia and have made it clear that small groups who post their videos on social media do not represent Papua New Guinea as a country," he continued.

"The West Papua issue is an internal problem for Indonesia and all this propaganda on Facebook raises serious concerns, and I call on the public to stop spreading these rumors and take responsibility because it can instigate anything else that can affect our people, especially the people of Papua New Guinea. who live near the border area," said Major General Toropo.
