Head of BRIN: LIPI-Papua Website Becomes Global Reference

The Head of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), Laksana Tri Handoko, welcomed the launch of the LIPI-Papua official website on Monday (3/5). The website is considered to be one of the national assets in the development of science because there is scientific data that has been gradually well documented. Milestones of scientific activities from various deputies within LIPI have been initiated for a long time, at least since 1980.

It is hoped that the LIPI-Papua digital information center will not only have a positive impact on the interests of science development, but also for the sake of determining science-based policies that have an impact on the interests of the Papuan people specifically and the national community in general.

This idea started from the LIPI Physics Research Center and also the LIPI Biology Research Center which became a pioneer in the Wamena area, Jayawijaya, Papua. The main focus is community empowerment through Appropriate Technology (TTG) and biodiversity conservation through the Wamena Biological Garden.

Until now, this research series is still being continued by the local government. In addition, research on the social and humanities aspects was intensified by LIPI social science researchers, one of which was the late Muridan. The information gathered from various research activities by various groups is not only static information, but also has a strategic meaning to show the world about Indonesia's attention and efforts to the great progress of Papua.

The LIPI-Papua digital information center will be managed by the Indonesian Research Data Manager (PDDI) LIPI within the One Indonesia Data structure. Information and research data related to Papua are also part of the National Scientific Repository system managed by PDDI.

So far, there are only two information centers related to Papua managed by two large foreign institutions, namely the Australian National University (ANU) Canberra, and one other in the Netherlands, although both are currently inactive. The newly launched LIPI-Papua digital information center is expected to become a global reference for research on Papua. "The existence of the LIPI-Papua website is actually a reaffirmation of LIPI's commitment to the Papua region," said Laksana in his virtual speech.
