The Governor of Kaltara is optimistic that Sepak Takraw will win gold in PON in Papua

The Governor of North Kalimantan, Zainal Arifin Paliwang is optimistic that the Kaltara takraw athletes can win gold at the XX PON in Papua.

"I noticed earlier that the potential for Kaltara's Sepak takraw, is gold for this PON. We have two tough opponents, South Sulawesi and Riau, "said Zainal when he saw the Kaltara takraw team practicing at the Datu Adil stadium in Tarakan, Sunday.

He hopes that the mentality of competing for this athlete from Kaltara can be better.

"The team really needs to try out against a strong province in this branch, to measure the athletes' ability on the D-day," said Zainal, who came to give moral support to the Bumi Benuanta contingent.

The governor plans to monitor the preparation of all sports that will compete in the XX PON, and will accommodate all needs. Starting from preparation to return to Kaltara.

Apart from that, the Provincial Government of Kaltara is still trying to meet budget needs. From the proposal of KONI Kaltara, it takes funds of around Rp. 22 billion.

"We are looking for a budget. The submission from KONI was approximately Rp. 22 billion, ”said Zainal.

He really hopes that the Kaltara contingent can win as much gold as possible at the PON Papua which will be held in October to get into the top 20.

"We expect as much gold as possible from the sport. From the 12 sports, we hope that all of them will get gold, "said Zainal.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Kaltara KONI Muhammad Nasir explained the preparations for the Kaltara contingent.

According to him, currently athletes are still doing independent training due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, two months before leaving for Papua, the sports branch will be given the opportunity to do try out to other regions, until before leaving for Papua.

"In about two months, we will send them to areas that are roughly safe from the COVID pandemic, so they can try out there, test matches there. After that we will immediately go to Papua, ”said Nasir.

He hopes that the proposed budget support can be met by the Provincial Government of Kaltara, so that KONI can freely send athletes, including meeting the needs of athletes. The Rp22 billion budget is considered quite realistic, because it covers everything from the current preparation to returning to Kaltara.

"Hopefully the provincial government, especially the governor, in this case will no longer reduce the budget, because this PON is not in West Java, not in East Java, this is Papua whose challenges are very tough for the real KONI and the athletes," he said.
