Expansion of Papua, Imitating Changes in West Papua

Minister of Home Affairs (Mendagri) Tito Karnavian revealed that Papua Province will become six provinces, namely, Southwest Papua, West Papua, Central Papua, Central Mountains, South Papua, and Papua Tabi Saireri.

He stated that the division of the region in Papua is important considering its very wide geographical conditions have resulted in the acceleration of development which is expensive, difficult access, and very long bureaucracy.

Tito also gave an example with the positive results of the division of Papua Province into West Papua Province, although initially it raised pros and cons.

"We hope this will replicate how the acceleration of West Papua has changed, to replicate it in Papua, where some areas are still left behind by absorbing the aspirations for expansion," said Tito in a meeting with the Special Committee for the Revision of the Papua Special Autonomy Law at the Parliament Complex, Senayan, Jakarta on Thursday (8 / 4).

Based on Tito's explanation, all districts or cities in Papua have also been divided into parts of the six provinces.

A total of six districts or cities, namely Raja Ampat, Sorong South Sorong, Maybrat, Tambrauw, and Sorong City will become part of the Province of Southwest Papua.

Then seven districts namely Manokwari, Arfak Mountains, West Mankowari, Bintuni Bay, Wondama Bay, Fak Fak, and Kaimana will become part of West Papua Province.

Six districts namely Paniyai, Degiyai, Dogiyai, Intan Jaya, Mimika, and Nabire will become part of the Province of Central Papua.

Nine districts namely Jayawijaya, Yahukimo, Yalimo, Tolikara, Lanny Jaya, Membramo Tengah, Nduga, Puncak Jaya, and Puncak will be part of the Central Highlands Province.

Next, South Papua Province will cover five districts, namely Merauke, Asmat, Mappi, Bovendigoel, and Bintang Mountains.

Meanwhile, nine regencies or cities, namely Jayapura City, Jayapura, Keerom, Sarmi, Membramo Raya, Waropen, Yapen Islands, Biak Numfor, and Supiori will become part of the Papua Province Tabi Saireri.

Efforts to expand Papua have come a long way. In the last meeting with 61 figures from Papua and West Papua at the State Palace, Jakarta on September 10, 2019, President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) was asked to divide Papua into five provinces.
