The Dutch government only deceived Papuans that they could be independent, even though Indonesia's easternmost region had been part of the archipelago since August 24, 1828. This was revealed by Papuan leader Nick Messet during a conversation with Mata Indonesia TV, quoted Monday, March 29, 2021.
Nick got this knowledge from the leader of the Free Papua Organization (OPM) Nicolaas Jouwe, who said that his struggle to separate himself from Indonesia would be in vain.
According to Nick, when he said this, Nicolaas lived in the Netherlands and wanted to return to Papua because he was disappointed after learning about the lie.
"So the Dutch tricked us that later Papua would become independent. Impossible, "said Nick when telling the disappointment of the person he called the uncle.
As told by Nick, Nicolaas Jouwe revealed that Papua, formerly known as West Irian / Irian Jaya, was part of the Dutch East Indies.
So, when the Dutch Government handed over sovereignty over the Dutch East Indies and Papua.
That is why, even though he has lived in the Netherlands since the mid-1960s, Nicolaas was disappointed after learning about this lie.
This prompted Nicolaas to return to Papua which was realized in 2010 thanks to the help of Nick Messet, among others.
