The Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs (Menko Polhukam) Mahfud MD realized that during the first period of President Joko Widodo's administration there was a moratorium on regional expansion.
The moratorium was enforced because previously there were many regional expansion but it did not bring prosperity to the people.
In addition, the newly created autonomous regional APBD actually burdens the APBN because the regional budget continues to be supported by the central government. However, Mahfud assessed that the expansion of the central highlands in Papua would have a positive impact.
"Look, in general there is a moratorium but for Papua it is good politically, economically, administratively, and expansion is needed," said Mahfud at the Kemenko Polhukam Building, Jakarta.
He admitted that he had discussed the issue of expansion with the Minister of Home Affairs Tito Karnavian. Mahfud said the most important thing in executing this division was not to create jealousy from other regions.
"I have spoken with the Minister of Home Affairs. The division will be carried out but of course the procedural ways are sought so that jealousy does not occur. In Papua, it seems that the alternative is being split," Mahfud continued.
Previously, President Joko Widodo would follow up on the proposed expansion of the region in the Central Mountains, Papua Province. This was conveyed by the President during a dialogue with representatives of community leaders, religious leaders and Papuan traditional leaders in Wamena, Jayawijaya Regency, Papua.
In the dialogue, the Head of State stated that the expansion of regions throughout Indonesia was in a moratorium or suspension.
This is due to the large number of proposals for expansion, both from provinces and districts or cities.
"Actually, I said it as it is, in fact we have told you from the start that we have a moratorium on no expansion in all of Indonesia," Jokowi said in the official Palace press release.
"Because of what? Because there are 183 subdivisions of provinces, regencies, and cities that have been proposed to me. Once opened, the others will queue in front of my office every day," said the President.
However, Jokowi said specifically for the Central Highlands region, Papua, he would follow up on the proposed regional expansion. The President said that this would be his homework after returning from Papua.
"But especially for the Central Mountains, don't clap your hands first, I will follow up," he continued, greeted by applause from the audience.
