After being officially inaugurated on October 25, 2019, Deputy Minister of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) John Wempi Wetipo was assigned to oversee infrastructure projects in eastern Indonesia. Talking about infrastructure in Papua, Wempi said, the problem that must be addressed is connectivity.
He said, the existence of roads will facilitate the distribution of goods that have been relying only on air transportation. With the completion of road construction in Papua, the economic access of the people, especially those living in rural areas, will become easier. They can directly market agricultural products to economic centers.
Then in July, Wempi will travel from Wamena to Jayapura with a distance of about 580 kilometers. The trip aims to see the condition of the connectivity infrastructure that has been built in Papua. Even so, there is still unfinished homework. Wempi added, there are sections that are still under construction.
The section currently under construction is the road from the Star Mountains to Boven Digoel. Wempi hopes that once this road is built, connectivity can extend to the southern region or reach Merauke.
The government is currently completing the construction of the Trans-Papua Road that stretches along the Papua and West Papua regions.
In the Papua region, the road is located at Wamena-Habema-Kenyam-Mamugu (284.3 kilometers), Kwatisore (Papua province border) -Nabire (city limit) along 203.32 kilometers, Nabire-Wagete-Enarotali (275.5 kilometers ), and Enarotahlaga-Mulia-Wamena (513.4 kilometers).
Then, Wamena-Elelim-Jayapura (585 kilometers), Kenyam-Dekai (275.83 kilometers), Dekai-Oksibil (231.6 kilometers), Oksibil-Waropko (135.01 kilometers), Waropko-Tanah Merah-Merauke (533 , 06 kilometers), and Wagete-Timika (222.43 kilometers). Then for the West Papua region, the road begins to stretch from Orong-Maybrat-Manokwari for 594.81 kilometers and Manokwari-Mameh-Wasior-Batas Papua for 475.81 kilometers.
