Responses of Papuan Traditional Leaders Regarding Special Autonomy

The end of Special Autonomy (Otsus) in 2021 has raised many voices in Papua. Officials, intellectual figures and even ordinary people commented on the program intended for indigenous Papuans.

Otsus itself if calculated has been running for approximately 17 years, where that age is a long time to implement a policy which is currently assessed with a different view.

There are those who think that Otsus has failed and there are those who think that Otsus has not failed, but that is the view of various parties at this time, which in the end has led some Papuan traditional leaders to speak up.

One of those who participated in evaluating Otsus came from the Chairman of the Keerom Traditional Institute who is also a member of the Keerom Regency DPRD, Bonifasius Moenda.

He considered that Otsus needs to be continued, but it must first be reviewed and refined the articles so that the program can truly benefit the survival of the Papuan people.

"Otsus must continue to run, but it is necessary to carry out an assessment and revision of the articles and paragraphs in the Special Autonomy Law, so that the special autonomy funds can touch the people," said Bonifasius when met at his residence, Friday (7/8) morning.

He hopes that the central government can seriously encourage and accommodate the management of Otsus so that there is no upheaval in society.

According to him, there must be socialization from the central government about Otsus to the Papuan people, as well as the use of Otsus funds so far it must be examined properly and professionally.

His party, said Boniface, would jointly fight for this, so that social jealousy and upheavals in Papua could subside.

"So that we can jointly build Papua within the framework of this country," he said.

In a different place, the Papuan traditional leader who is also Ondofo Sereh Village, Yanto Eluay, asked the Papuan people to support any policies and steps that were taken and decided by the central government in order to prosper the people of Papua.

In connection with the end of Otsus in 2021, he appealed to all people to see Otsus from the perspective of people's welfare.

"My hope is that we will not do things that cause conflict among Papuans," he added.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Chief of the Central Highlands Tribe in Kerom Regency, Tiombri Wenda hopes that Otsus will continue for the development and progress of Papua.

"Representing the people of the Central Highlands in Keerom Regency, I hope Papua's Otsus will continue, for the sake of development and progress in Papua," he hoped.

He said that those who reject Papua's Special Autonomy do not represent the voice of the Papuan people at all, they are the enemies of the Papuan people.

"So I emphasize this so that those who reject Otsus can be aware and join together to support Otsus for the advancement of Papua, which we both love," he said.

In line with Tiombri, one of the community leaders of the Central highlands of the Buper-Waena region, Nairon Wenda, who is also the Chairman of RW XIII of Waena Village, added that his party supports Otsus to continue.

"Because we still need development. For those who reject Otsus, we do not agree, because we still want development to occur in this land so that Papua will be more advanced. NKRI has a fixed price, "said Nairon.
