West Papua Governor Dominggus Mandacan began to ban the arrival of residents from outside the area to prevent the spread of the new corona virus (COVID-19).
At a press conference in Manokwari, Friday night, he mentioned two patients in West Papua who were confirmed to be positive for COVID-19. Both, he said, a patient in Sorong City and one of them had died.
The findings based on the laboratory test, he also set the status of emergency response in the region of West Papua for the non-natural disaster. The response period lasts for 14 days, from 27 March to 9 April 2020.
In addition to prohibiting the arrival of citizens who are not KTP West Papua, Mandacan prohibits residents in the area from visiting other provinces, except for important matters. He also limited the mobility of residents between districts / cities so that new corona virus cases did not spread to all regions.
To the COVID-19 Task Force for the Acceleration of Prevention and Control, both provincial and district and city, he stressed more intensive prevention efforts, including overseeing the flow of transportation between regions.
"Even though we prohibit the entry of other local residents into West Papua and vice versa, the flight schedule is still open. The passenger ship stopped temporarily, the last afternoon in Manokwari," he said.
For logistic ships or cargo ships to and from West Papua, he said, were still being opened, efforts to prevent the spread of COVID-19 had no impact on the economy of the community.
To optimize prevention efforts, he also emphasized that people obey governmental instructions, including implementing social restrictions and restricting activities outside the home.
"Our emergency response period lasts for 14 days. Furthermore, it will be evaluated if conditions improve, will be revoked and can continue if the number of cases is high," he said.
