Papua Regional Police Chief Denies Veronica Koman's Reckless Statement

Seeing the statement of pro-activist Free Papua Movement (OPM) Veronica Koman, related to the existence of 57 Papuan political prisoners as reported by some media recently, Papua Police Chief Inspector General Police Paul Waterpauw spoke.

According to Paulus, the 57 detainees were pure criminal cases because they were involved in riots in Papua in August 2019. Paulus considered, Veronica Koman's statement had no legal basis and was impressed to discredit the police who tried to enforce the law.

"I, as the Papua Police Chief, strongly reject Veronica Koman's statement. The 57 people arrested by the police were not political cases, but they were arrested for the crime they committed in the previous riots. What we do is positive law enforcement in Indonesia, "Paulus said in the Papua Regional Police Headquarters, Friday, February 14, 2020.

Related to that, Paulus invited all elements of society not to be affected by Veronica Koman's statement which aims to worsen the security and order of the community (kamtibmas) in Papua. The public is also advised not to verbalize the statement.

Because, at this time the ranks continue to work to realize a more secure and peaceful Indonesian Papuan land. Paulus asserted that his party would not remain silent if there were certain individuals who tried to disrupt kamtibmas, by issuing provocative statements.

"Do not just blabbery without knowing what really happened. That is pure crime, many casualties and property," he said.
