The government will build an Integrated Palapa Ring project that passes through 14 provinces in Indonesia.
This is stated in the Regulation of the Minister of the Economy (Permenko Ekonomi) Number 09 of 2022 concerning Amendments to the Regulation of the Coordinating Minister for the Economy Number 07 of 2021 concerning Amendments to the List of National Strategic Projects.
Head of the Papua Communications and Information Service, Jeri Agus Yudianto, said that regarding the plan, the Papua Provincial Government is ready to provide full support.
"We provide support in order to break the gap in telecommunications services in the Bumi Cenderawasih area," Jeri told reporters, Tuesday (11/8/2022) in Jayapura.
According to Jeri, the Integrated Palapa Ring aims to erase the digital divide in Indonesia.
"PRI connects 14 provinces and 78 regencies/cities as well as 129 cities with a fiber optic network of 11,610 km and 46 hops microwave links," he said.
Jeri said that while the Integrated Palapa Ring in Papua on the Code Project P-34 and P-28 started from Serui to Sawai to Teba to Sarmi, continued to Jayapura, while P-17 started from Keppi–Bade–Merauke.
"PRI in Papua is expected to increase Internet bandwidth capacity in every area it passes, and is also expected to be one of the contingency links in the northern region of the island of Papua which often experiences cut offs because there is a ring looping from Jayapura to Serui and outside Papua," he said.
Furthermore, Jeri admitted that for its construction, it is suspected that there will be obstacles in the licensing process due to the dynamics of the expansion of the New Autonomous Region (DOB) which will make the RTRW in Papua undergo adjustments.
"Because this Integrated Palapa Ring, one of the routes is in the South Papua region," he said.
He added, however, that his party hopes that with the support of the community and the district/city government, this project can be implemented for the continuity of telecommunication services in Papua.
