The Jayawijaya Regency Government, Papua Mountains Province assisted 12 boats or jongkong to motivate the productivity of fishermen who live in the Baliem River Basin (DAS).
Acting Head of Production Division at the Jayawijaya Fisheries Service, Jovita Riwanti in Wamena, Friday, said that with this assistance traditional fishermen can be more enthusiastic about finding fish to sell.
"This year we will give jongkong to the people in the watershed area but it is limited. The number is 12 units," he said.
Jongkong or sampan made of whole logs are ordered or produced directly by the local community. The assistance was not given to individuals but to business groups.
"These are distributed to the people around Kali Baliem. So before giving them, we conduct a survey so that they are right on target. Don't they have no activity to catch them but give them. It will be useless, and the aid has been distributed," he said.
He ensured that the boats handed over were equipped with nets, nets, fish baskets, and even flashlights because people usually catch them at night.
"The flashlight with the basket supports the catching of cherax freshwater shrimp or what is known by the public as cheating shrimp. These shrimp are also quite expensive in the market because the range can be up to Rp. 800 thousand per medium plastic bag," he said.
Jovita added that apart from the equipment assistance, the government routinely distributes fresh water fish seeds to fish farmers. And this has been done by most of the people in the freshwater fish development area.
"The previous year we had this program and it was distributed at a number of points, but in 2022 there will be no seed assistance," he said.
