The government of Biak Numfor Regency, Papua is targeting in 2024 to achieve malaria elimination in the area.
"Malaria elimination is an effort to stop local transmission of malaria in one geographical area in Biak Numfor 2024," said Head of the Disease Prevention Control (P2P) Division of the Biak Health Service, Ruslan Epid, in Biak, Tuesday.
Ruslan admitted, there are still cases of malaria, but they are not found in the area concerned, but it is possible that mosquitoes that transmit malaria can still be found.
"So that the vigilance of health workers, the government and the public is still needed to prevent the transmission of malaria," added Head of P2P Ruslan Epid.
Ruslan mentioned, malaria cases in Biak Numfor Regency were already in 24th place compared to other diseases.
Malaria pain is described by the annual parasite incidence (API), according to the Head of Ruslan, for Biak of 5/1,000 population.
Ruslan stated, API is the morbidity rate per 1000 population at risk in one year.
"The API number is used to determine the level of malaria endemicity in an area," said Head of P2P Ruslan.
Head of the P2P Health Office, Ruslan, said that currently the Health Office through health facilities such as Puskesmas, Pustu and hospitals continues to intensify blood tests on patients to ensure that they have malaria.
Even now, continued Ruslan, the Biak Health Office has increased training for malaria cadres in various villages and districts to accelerate the Biak Numfor malaria elimination target in 2024.
"The existence of malaria cadres to help prevent and treat malaria in the villages," he said.
The declaration of Biak to eliminate malaria in 2024 was carried out by the Regent Herry Ario Naap together with the Director General of P2P of the Ministry of Health Dr. Maxi Rein Rondonuwu in Binyeri Samber Village, Yendidori District on 7 November 2022.
